Alder - Informal Upright

I've got a particular passion for Alder because it is a constant battle to keep the leaves small. Constant pinching on an almost daily basis seems to work well and provides dense ramification in the winter. Not an obvious choice for a beginner, I would recommend it because it needs constant attention and provides experience quickly. (More below)

Spring 2001 and the new growth is starting to get too big already. The most annoying trait of alder is the way the buds that grow in the right place point in the wrong direction but this just means that you have to continually cut back to a bud that is growing downwards or sideways. The method that I use to keep the leaf size manageable is to continually remove leaves as soon as they become too large. In this way back-budding is a continual occurence throughout the growing season. I only stop pinching after mid-summer as any new growth produced will no harden off in time before winter.
