Outdoor Bonsai - A brief explanation

It is a common misconception amongst those yet to discover the joys of Bonsai that it is an indoor pastime. This could not be further from the truth.
Probably more than 95% of species commonly used in Bonsai in the UK are outdoor species.
Indoor species are only labelled as such because they are generally not hardy but even these species will perform better if given time outdoors when conditions allow.
This situation of misunderstanding has largely come about because the mass produced Bonsai commonly seen comprise mainly tropical species that are easy to grow and quick to mature.
Outdoor species usually native western trees are the domain of the more experienced and serious enthusiast and because they are slower to mature and usually require a deeper understanding they are apparently less common and the cost is higher. However, with a little understanding they are probably easier to maintain than their tropical cousins whilst offering better entertainment value as each season brings a fresh approach and task to be carried out.
Here we offer a selection of trees that are suitable for outdoor cultivation. Check the details of each species as some will require frost protection during the winter.

DAESHOJO MAPLES
The most popular choice of Maple and the one most mass produced, the appeal of the Daeshojo or Japanese Red Maple lies in its vivid red foliage in the spring. The red leaves fade to a reddish green through the summer.
To be kept outdoors but protected from strong wind. Frost protection is not essential but as with all trees in a pot is advisable to some extent just to be on the safe side....
TRIDENT MAPLE
There are many diferent cultivars of Trident Maple ranging in growth habits from naturally large to dwarf in nature.
Trident Maple is only suitable for outdoor cultivation and will require protection from frost during the winter.
Not recommended for beginners
CHINESE PEPPER
A vigourous species that buds freely from old wood and resonds well to pruning. The foliage has a subtle aroma that gives this tree its name.
Suitable for beginners
Suitable for outdoor cultivation with protetction from frost during winter.
CHINESE ELM
The most popular choice for beginners,
easy to care for with naturally small leaves
Can be kept indoors or in a sheltered
outdoor situation
SAGERETIA
Another popular choice for beginners the Chinese Sweet Plum has attractive peeling bark, summer flowers and winter berries
Can be kept indoors or in a sheltered
outdoor situation.
Can suffer from leaf burn so needs some protection from wind.
CUPHEA
Free flowering shrub with excellent potential as Bonsai.Suitable for indoor or frost free outdoor cultivation
